July 19, 2015
Cincinnati
University of Cincinnati Police Officer Ray Tensing gunned down Samuel DuBose, 43, after pulling him over when the officer noticed that DuBose’s car was missing a front license plate. Prosecutors say that after Tensing stopped the vehicle, DuBose refused to provide a driver’s license and, instead, showed the officer “a bottle of alcohol” and wouldn’t get out of the car. Tensing, who is white, said he was dragged by Dubose’s car and forced to shoot, according to the university’s police report. In a radio call conversation with the dispatcher,Tensing said the car almost ran over him and he fired one shot, striking DuBose in the head. DuBose, who is black, was not armed. Tensing is charged with one count each of murder and voluntary manslaughter.

Harrison Twp.
Two Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies fatally shot Dontae Martin, 34, after he crashed his car into a parked vehicle and allegedly pulled a gun when the deputies approached just after midnight. As the deputies approached the car they look in using a flashlight and noticed that the gun was pointed at them, Sheriff Phil Plummer said. Deputies Gus Teague and Joshua Haas ordered Martin several times to drop the 20-round FN Five-seveNCQ semiautomatic pistol, the sheriff said. When he didn’t comply, the deputies opened fire. The case is under investigation.

North Charleston, S.C.
North Charleston Police Officer Michael T. Slager gunned down Walter L. Scott, 50, as the father of four and U.S. Coast Guard veteran ran from the officer after a traffic stop. Slager, who is white, said he feared for his life because the man took a stun gun during a scuffle. But a video shot by a passerby tells a different story. The video shows Slager firing eight times and shooting Scott, who is black, in the back as Scott ran away across a grassy lot. Scott was driving a Mercedes-Benz and had been stopped by Slager for a broken tail light, according to police reports. Slager was indicted on a murder charge and is being held in jail without bail.

Chamblee, Ga.
DeKalb County Police Officer Robert Olson fatally shot Anthony Hill, 27, who was black. Olson shot Hill because he ignored the officer’s command to stop as he approached Olson, officials said. The shooting happened after residents of an apartment complex called 911 because Hill was reportedly knocking on doors and running and crawling through the complex. Hill, an Air Force veteran, was naked and unarmed. The case remains under investigation.

Madison, Wis.
Madison Police Officer Matthew Kenny fatally shot 19-year-old Tony Robinson, who was black. The shooting occurred after Robinson attacked Kenny, who is white. The officer had responded to reports of Robinson assaulting two people, and he had been jumping in front of moving vehicles, officials said. Robinson was reportedly unarmed when he was shot seven times. The shooting was ruled justified.

Aurora, Colo.
Naeschylus Vinzant, 37, was fatally shot when Aurora police officers attempted to arrest him after he violated his parole and removed his ankle monitor, officials said.The Aurora Police Department has yet to say why Vinzant was shot, nor have theyidentified the officer who shot him. Vinzant, who was black, had a long criminal history, including kidnapping and robbery, according to media reports.The case remains under investigation.

Cameroonian native Charly Leundeu Keunang, 43, was fatally shot by multiple Los Angeles police officers during a scuffle with the homeless man. The officers went to question Keunang, who is black, about a theft when the scuffle broke out and he reportedly reached for an officer’s gun. The officers who shot the man have not been identified. The case remains under investigation.

Omaha, Neb.
Omaha Police Officer Alvin Lugod fatally shot Daniel Elrod, 39, who was white. The man had just robbed a Family Dollar store, according to reports, and four officers, including Lugod, responded and confronted him. Elrod ignored commands and repeatedly reached for his waistband, and he dared officers to shoot him, officials said. Lugod, who is Asian, shot Elrod as he turned to grab a fence. Elrod reportedly had a long criminal history. The shooting was ruled justified.

Pasco, Wash.
Antonio Zambrano-Montes, 35, who was Hispanic, was gunned down by multiple Pasco police officers. Zambrano-Montes had reportedly been throwing rocks at cars and struck two officers. When the officers approached him, Zambrano-Montes allegedly struck two of them, and refused to comply with their commands. According to the New York Times, a video shot by a bystander shows him standing near the officers and throwing an object at them or their car, and then moving away from them, across a busy street. In the video the officers can be seen firing at Zambrano-Montes a few times as he retreats, and then all three give chase. Seconds later, he turns to face them while lifting an object in his hand, and all three officers open fire. The officers involved have been identified as Ryan Flanagan, Adam Wright and Adrian Alaniz. The case remains under investigation.

Hummelstown, Pa.
David Kassick, 59, was fatally shot as he laid faced down. The incident occurred after Officer Lisa Mearkle attempted to stop Kassick for driving with expired inspection stickers. Kassick, who was white, refused to stop and drove to his sister’s house, abandoned his car and fled on foot. The officer chased him and eventually tased Kassick, according to media reports. As Kassick lay on the ground, Mearkle, who is also white, shot him in the back twice. The officer fired her gun because Kassick kept reaching for something on his body, as if he was getting a weapon, Mearkle reportedly said. Kassick was not armed. Mearkle was charged with criminal homicide.

Jessica Hernandez, 17, was gunned down by Denver Police Officers Daniel Greene and Gabriel Jordan. Hernandez, who was Hispanic, was driving four other teenagers in her car and reportedly drove at the officers, prompting them to fire their weapons, officials said, noting that the car could be considered a weapon. The shooting was ruled justified.

Decatur, Ga.
DeKalb County Police Officer Joseph Pitts, whose race is unknown, fatally shot Kevin Davis, 44, after he called 911 because his girlfriend had been stabbed. When the officer arrived at the scene, he shot Davis’ dog he thought it was going to bite him. Davis then confronted Pitts while yelling and holding a gun, and refused to drop it, according to media reports. It’s unclear if Davis, who is black, pointed the gun at the officer. The case remains under investigation.

Police Officer Brent Lawing fatally shot Dennis Grigsby, who had a history of mental illness. Lawing had responded to a residential burglary call, and the home owners said they heard noises in their garage. The officer investigated and found Grigsby in the dimly lit garage while holding a metal object, according to media reports. Grigsby reportedly moved toward Lawing aggressively and ignored the officer’s command to stop, and Lawing fired his weapon. The metal object Grigsby was reportedly holding turned out to be a spoon.

Rumain Brisbon, 34, was fatally shot by Officer Mark Rine of the Phoenix Police Department during an altercation between the two men. Brisbon, who was black, was sitting in his car when Rine approached him during a drug investigation. Brisbon reportedly tried to flee from his car, and as the two struggled, Brisbon put his hand in his pocket. Rine, who is white, thought the man was reaching for a gun and shot him, according to media reports. Officials later found a stash of Oxycodone, a stolen gun and an undisclosed amount of cash in Brisbon’s apartment and car. The shooting was ruled justified.

A 12-year-old boy, Tamir Rice, who was pointing a toy gun at people in a park, was fatally shot after someone called 911 to complain. The caller told the 911 dispatcher that the gun probably wasn’t real. Timothy Loehmann was one of two officers who responded. Within two seconds of arriving, Loehmann, who is white, shot Rice, a video shows. The shooting remains under investigation.

Brooklyn, N.Y.
New York Police Officer Peter Liang fatally shot Akai Gurley, 28, in a dark stairwell in a New York City housing project. The bullet reportedly ricocheted off a wall and struck Gurley in the chest. Liang’s lawyer has said the shooting was an accident, according to media reports. Gurley was not a threat, nor was he suspected of a crime, officials said. Liang, who is Asian-American, was charged with manslaughter.

St. Louis
Kajieme Powell, 25, was fatally shot as he walked toward two St. Louis police officer while holding a knife and ignoring their commands to drop it. He reportedly was mentally ill, according to media reports. Powell, who reportedly had just shoplifted, walked toward the officers and shouting at them to shoot him, a video shows. The officers repeatedly told Powell, who was black, to drop the knife. When he got within 8 feet of one officer, they shot him. The officers have not been identified but appeared to be white in the video.

Ferguson, Mo.
Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson fatally shot Michael Brown, 18, who was black. Prior to the shooting, Brown stole several packs of cigarettes from a convenience store and pushed the clerk. Wilson, who is white, responded and confronted Brown and his friend, Dorian Johnson. An altercation ensued with Brown and Wilson. During the struggle, Wilson shot Brown, and the shooting set of weeks of protests. Wilson was not indicted.

Beavercreek
Beavercreek Police Officer Sean Williams, who is white, fatally shot Walmart shopper John Crawford III, 22, as he was in an aisle of the store while talking on the phone and holding a BB gun rifle. Williams and his partner Sgt. David Darkow had been called to the store on a report of a man waving a gun at people in the story. Williams said he shot Crawford, who is black, twice because the man did not comply with commands to drop the gun. A grand jury declined to indict Williams, however, the U.S. Department of Justice has launched its own investigation into the shooting.
