| If the recession continues, what impact will that have on Clayton’s budget and what proactive measures should the council be making to assure that essential services continue for Clayton residents? | ||
Essential services of police and EMS/fire protection are supported by individual tax levies which are dedicated to those services. These funds have actually increased, due to levy renewals passed last year. To protect the future of the general fund (roads, parks, administrative services and supplementation of the safety services) the city will limit new capital fund expenditures to one item per department and pay some expenses from excess resources “saved” in other areas of the budget.

The main result will be less money for city services for instance Fire, Police, Road repair and winter salt. Clayton needs to be aggressively seeking new business and helping established businesses to be successful to offset the effects of the recession. Also more cooperation between the local cities on Fire, Police, and the purchase of winter supplies would not only save money but increase response time on both fire and police.
