| What priorities should the commission set for city administrators as the city begins looking at additional budget cuts and service reductions to answer the projected $15 million to $20 million budget deficit for 2010? | ||
Safety should remain a top priority. I am in favor of identifying traditional and new technology to achieve this goal. Economic development should be a high priority and we should collaborate on regional opportunities to create and retain jobs. We should also maintain quality of life amenities for our senior citizens, youth and families. Lastly, keeping our tradition of quality financial management based on best in class metrics should remain a priority.

The key to handling the city’s budget deficit is to focus on investing in public safety, vital services, infrastructure and development. Providing these vital services to our citizens-police and fire protection, street maintenance, water services and garbage removal is our first responsibility. We must streamline Dayton government while protecting these services and not raising taxes. I will also focus on land reuse and redevelopment to improve our city and transform blighted properties.

Commissioners should only set priorities for the City Manager and then allow him to lead, and be held accountable. We must guide from behind, not from in front. We have to deliver basic services right, before promising what we can’t deliver. The Wayne Avenue Kroger boondoggle was government sidetracked. Spending $800K to buy real estate, instead of delivering service is a mistake, these mistakes add up. My priority is to empower the city manager.
