Escalade removed from lake

Dayton, Riverside Police and fire departments also Five Rivers MetroParks police assist in the removal of a Cadillac Escalade from Eastwood Lake in Riverside on Sunday, Nov. 1. The driver supposedly swerved to miss an animal on Route 4 and drove into the lake. The male driver escaped the vehicle and suffered minor injuries.

Levy rally held for Xenia schools

"It's Our Turn Now, Xenia!" pep rally for Xenia Community Schools levy at Cox Stadium in Xenia. Xenia Community Schools' has a 7.9 mil levy on the ballot and is able to receive 57.7 mil from the State of Ohio from a tobacco statement if the levy passes to build 7 new school buildings and renovate 2 schools.

Institute offers river education

The Rivers Institute at the University of Dayton's annual River Stewards trip stops Wednesday, Aug. 19, along the Great Miami River in downtown Dayton. Working in partnership with the Miami Conservancy District and Five Rivers MetroParks, the Rivers Institute goal is to help educate both UD students and the public about the ecological and economic importance of rivers to local communities.

AmeriCorps volunteers in Dayton

About 25 Dayton area AmeriCorps volunteers joined 75,000 other volunteers across the country in community service to mark AmeriCorps Week. Local volunteers from the Notre Dame Mission Volunteer Program helped plant flowers and mulch beds Wednesday, May 13, at the Five Rivers MetroParks headquarters on Siebenthaler Avenue in Dayton.

RiverScape planning changes

Instead of breaking ground, Five Rivers MetroParks ceremonially covered asphalt with soil on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, to mark the beginning of the next phase of construction at RiverScape in downtown Dayton. The third phase will add a permanent pavilion for concerts and festivals during warmer months and put the park's ice rink under roof during the winter. Also included in the $7.5 million project is a bike hub building.

Trotwood ballot recount

Montgomery County Board of Elections employees worked Friday, Dec. 5, in the recount of the Trotwood 1-mill renewal street levy. Workers hand counted 631 votes cast in Priecinct 2-E, which was more than the required 5 percent. The hand-counted totals matched the certified results. Then all the votes from all precincts were recounted by machine. There was a 1-vote difference with 1 ballot, the intent of which was in question.

Bald eagles make Dayton home

Dayton’s Mad River well field, just east of Eastwood MetroPark, is home to a family of two adult and two juvenile bald eagles who took up residence this year in a Sycamore tree by renovating the old nest of a red-tailed hawk.
