Pair hikes to promote parks levy

Angie Sullivan and Shane Sheldon hiked to all the 18 MetroParks, covering approximately 125 miles, to raise awareness for Issue 4, a replacement levy for the Five Rivers MetroParks. The pair finished their 7-day hike Friday, Oct. 30, 2009 when they arrived at Deeds Point MetroPark, in Dayton. They were greeted by family, friends and MetroPark employees.

Man dies in Dayton house fire

A 53-year-old man died in a fire at 2631 E. Third in Dayton early on Thursday, October 29. Early reports from the Dayton Fire Department indicate that the man was smoking while using oxygen when the fire started.

Deer damages dealership

Employees at Foreman Blair Pontiac Buick, 224 E. Columbia St., arrived at work early Wednesday, Oct. 28, to discover a deer had crashed through a large window, causing damage throughout an office and showroom.

Firefighters quickly doused flames coming from an apartment at 12 S. Westview Ave. Wednesday morning, Oct. 28, 2009. The fire has been ruled suspicious and arson investigators were called to the scene.

General gets Boy Scout award

Retired Maj. Gen. Charles D. Metcalf is presented with the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award (DESA) by former astronaut and DESA recipient Neil Armstrong during a ceremony Tuesday, Oct. 27, at the National Museum of the United States Air Force where Metcalf now serves as director. Metcalf received his Eagle award on Aug. 19, 1949, as a Boy Scout in Anamosa, Iowa.

RiverScape pavilion construction

Construction of the pavilion at RiverScape continued Tuesday, Oct. 27. The work, which is part of a $7.5 million project on Monument Avenue at Patterson Boulevard, is the third and final phase of the Riverscape development. Concerts will be held at the pavilion in the warm weather and it will house an ice rink in winter.

Marker for Natalie Barney unveiled

A small crowd gathered in Copper Park in Dayton Sunday to watch the unveiling of the first historical marker in the state of Ohio to recognize sexual orientation. Daytonian Natalie Barney's marker has a permanent spot in Dayton history.

Warren County flu vaccine clinic

The Warren County Health Department offered 1,500 H1N1 nasal vaccine sprays on Oct. 24 at the Warren County Fairgrounds in Lebanon. The vaccine was available to children and young adults aged 2 to 24, adults 25 to 49 who care for a child under six months old, or a health care provider with no chronic health conditions.
